San Martín de Castañeda, known locally as Samartín de Castañeda, is a town that belongs to the municipality of Galende, in the province of Zamora, within the autonomous community of Castile and León. This charming village is located in the Natural Park of Lake Sanabria, the largest glacial lake in Spain and a protected natural area of great tourist attraction.

Historical Origins
#

The origin of San Martín de Castañeda probably dates back to the Suevian-Visigothic period of the 6th century, when the first annex and servitude constructions were built around the monastery that bears its name. This monastery was founded in 921 by Mozarabic monks who fled Córdoba, under Muslim rule. Over time, the monastery became one of the most important monastic centers in the Kingdom of León, documenting stays of Leonese kings, such as Ordoño III, in the years 952 and 953.

A Monastic and Cultural Center
#

During the Middle Ages, the monastery was rebuilt and renovated, reaching its current form, except for some parts destroyed in the 19th century due to the Mendizábal disentailment. Currently, the monastery houses the Interpretation Center of the Natural Park of Lake Sanabria, offering visitors a deep insight into the flora, fauna and geology of this unique region.

The church of San Martín de Castañeda, annexed to the monastery, is an impressive three-nave building with large square pillars. Inside the church is an image of Saint Martin of Tours, the patron saint of the town, represented in the frieze of the door cutting his cloak to share it with a poor man. Another cultural treasure is the image of the Virgin of the Pilgrim, patron saint of the town, whose festivity is celebrated on the first Sunday of September.

Miguel de Unamuno and the Legend of Valverde de Lucerna
#

The renowned writer Miguel de Unamuno visited San Martín de Castañeda and Lake Sanabria on June 1, 1930. This visit inspired his famous work “San Manuel Bueno, Martyr”, where the author dedicates two poems to this region. One of these poems specifically refers to the town of San Martín de Castañeda, while the other deals with the legend of Valverde de Lucerna, a town that according to tradition is submerged under the waters of the lake.

Festivities and Traditions
#

San Martín de Castañeda celebrates two main festivals: the feast of the Virgin of the Pilgrim on the first weekend of September, and the feast of Saint Martin on November 11. In addition, the town is known for the “Talanqueira o Visparra”, one of the most peculiar winter masquerades in the province of Zamora, which is celebrated on January 5. In this festivity, characters dressed as bull and cow walk through the streets of the town, in a tradition full of symbolism and joy.
