Puebla de Sanabria

Puebla de Sanabria, locally known as “La Viella”, is a picturesque town located in the province of Zamora, in the autonomous community of Castile and León. This municipality is the center of the Sanabria region and includes the towns of Castellanos, Robledo, and Ungilde. With an area of 81.39 km² and a population of 1,409 inhabitants according to the 2018 census, Puebla de Sanabria stands as a tourist destination that combines history, culture, and nature.

History and Heritage

The history of Puebla de Sanabria dates back to ancient times, with mentions in historical documents dating back to the 6th century. During the Middle Ages, the town consolidated as a strategic point due to its location on the border with Portugal. Alfonso IX of León, in 1220, granted the town a charter, strengthening its castle and defenses, which marked the beginning of a period of growth and economic, political, and military relevance.

The Castle of the Counts of Benavente

One of the architectural jewels of Puebla de Sanabria is the Castle of the Counts of Benavente, built between 1455 and 1499 by Rodrigo Alonso Pimentel. This castle stands in a privileged position within the old town, standing out for its quadrangular plan and semi-cylindrical cubes that surround the structure. The Keep, known as “El Macho”, is a distinctive feature of the fortress.

The castle has witnessed numerous historical events, including the wars with Portugal and the War of the Spanish Succession. Today, the castle houses the Center for Fortifications, where visitors can learn about the history of the castle and the region. Additionally, the Governor’s House on the north wing serves as a visitor center and tourist office.

Church of Santa María del Azogue

Another building of great relevance is the Church of Santa María del Azogue, built in the 12th century. This church, in the Romanesque style with later Renaissance and Baroque modifications, is located in the Plaza Mayor. Its access doors stand out: the south door, with three archivolts decorated with floral and geometric motifs, and the west door, with four pointed archivolts. Inside, the church houses important artistic treasures, such as slate sculptures and granite details.

Other Monuments of Interest

In addition to the castle and the church, Puebla de Sanabria has other notable monuments, such as the Town Hall, located in the Plaza Mayor. This building, with a rectangular floor plan and two floors, features a facade with a porch and a porticoed gallery, architectural elements typical of the region.

The Fort of San Carlos, located outside the walls, offers a breathtaking view of the town and was a key piece in the defense during the wars with Portugal. On the other hand, the Ermita de San Cayetano, built in the 17th century, is an example of local Baroque and reflects the religious devotion of the community.

Culture and Traditions

Puebla de Sanabria is rich in traditions and celebrations that attract visitors from all over. The Virgin of the Azogue is the patron saint of the town, and her feast day is celebrated on August 15 with a series of events including a medieval market, declared of regional tourist interest.

The Festivities of the Virgin of the Victories, celebrated on September 8, are particularly known for their pyrotechnics, parades of giants and bigheads, and other cultural events that make these festivities one of the most outstanding in the Sanabria region. During these festivities, locals and visitors enjoy the “toros de fuego”, a unique pyrotechnic tradition in the region.

In February, the Festivities of the Virgin of the Candelas are another special occasion, with events such as the burning of a large bonfire and verbenas that last until dawn. These festivities are celebrated in the San Francisco neighborhood and are known for their festive and welcoming atmosphere.

The location of Puebla de Sanabria in the Sanabria region offers a beautiful natural environment. The nearby Sanabria Lake Natural Park is a must-see for nature lovers. This glacial lake is the largest in the Iberian Peninsula and offers activities such as hiking, boating, and bird watching.

The gastronomy of Puebla de Sanabria is another one of its great attractions. Local products, such as Sanabria cheese, mushrooms, and octopus, are key ingredients in local cuisine. Visitors can enjoy traditional dishes in local restaurants, where food is prepared with fresh regional products.
