The name “Escuredo” is often associated with its location in a valley that seems “dark”. However, research suggests that the name may derive from the term “eskur-” and the suffix “-edo”, indicating an area rich in elm trees. The inhabitants of this pedanía of the municipality of Rosinos de la Requejada are known as Escuredanos.

Escuredo is located at the confluence of several streams, creating a natural environment of great beauty. Among the prominent streams are the Rigada, the Humeiro, and others that together form the river of Escuredo.

History

The history of Escuredo dates back to ancient times, with the first written reference in the Tumbo of the Monastery of San Martín de Castañeda, dated 1259. During the Middle Ages, the area was integrated into the Kingdom of León and was part of the domain of the Monastery of San Martín de Castañeda. In the Modern Age, it was part of the province of the Lands of the Count of Benavente.

Legend of the Virgin of Aparecida

One of the most fascinating legends of Escuredo is that of the Virgin of Aparecida. According to tradition, the villagers were trying to build a church in the center of the village, but a mysterious force destroyed the work during the night. One day, they found an image of the Virgin Mary on a rock covered in snow on the mountain. This was interpreted as a divine message, and thus the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aparecida was built, which today is an important pilgrimage center.

To reach Escuredo, you can take exit 75 or 79 of the A-52, the Rías Bajas highway. The road offers a charming journey through mountain oak landscapes, leading visitors to this hidden village that seems to emerge from another time. Using this same road, you can reach the fountain of the 7 spouts
