Doney de la Requejada is a charming village located in the municipality of Rosinos de la Requejada, in the Sanabria region, northwest of the province of Zamora. This picturesque village is a true cultural and natural treasure, with a rich history dating back to the Celtic era and lush nature.

Historical and Cultural Attractions

Among the main attractions of Doney are its ethnographic remains, such as an old oven and a mill, as well as one of the oldest chestnut trees in Europe. The parish church of Santa Eulalia de Mérida, with an impressive 19th-century bell tower, stands out as the main architectural monument of the village.

Doney also boasts a notable archaeological heritage, such as the remains of Celtic culture in “Peña Castriello”, which reflect the ancient presence of the Zoelas in the Sanabria region.

The village is surrounded by diverse landscapes, including the Sierra de La Cabrera and the impressive “Peña Castriello”. This area is home to a rich biodiversity, with species such as roe deer, wild boars, deer, wolves and mountain goats.

Doney de la Requejada is also known for its Catholic camp, “Campamento Doney”, which takes place every summer and attracts young people from all over the province of Zamora.

History

The history of Doney dates back to Celtic times, as evidenced by the numerous hill forts in the region. During the Middle Ages, the village was integrated into the Kingdom of León, with mentions in historical documents such as the Tumbo of the Monastery of San Martín de Castañeda. In 1156, Count Ponce de Cabrera donated half a casal in Doney to the monastery, highlighting the importance of the place at that time.

In the Modern Age, Doney was part of the Lands of the Count of Benavente and, after the provincial restructuring of 1833, it was integrated into the province of Zamora, within the Leonese Region. Around 1850, Doney joined the municipality of Rosinos de la Requejada.
