Donado

Donado is a small hamlet near Muelas de los Caballeros that surprises visitors with the majesty of its two temples. These are located a short distance from each other, creating an impressive contrast between the simplicity of the Romanesque temple and the grandeur of the Sanctuary of the Pilgrim Virgin.

Romanesque Church

The first of the temples, smaller and of Romanesque origin, stands out for its sober beauty. Although its simple appearance may go unnoticed next to the majestic sanctuary, its carefully carved stone and the serenity it exudes make it a place of great interest for lovers of rural heritage.

Sanctuary of the Pilgrim Virgin

A few meters away, the Sanctuary of the Pilgrim Virgin stands as a monumental work of the 19th century. Its construction, which began in 1800 and ended in 1888, was driven by the devotion of the local inhabitants and Bishop Manuel Obelar, who sent the image of the Pilgrim Virgin from Indochina.

This temple is a remarkable example of religious architecture, with a Latin cross plan and three naves. Its facade is flanked by two imposing towers, crowned by bell towers that give it a cathedral-like air. The interior, spacious and bright, highlights the popular devotion to the Virgin, whose ivory image, of Eastern origin, becomes the center of a massive pilgrimage every first Sunday of September.

Festivals and Pilgrimage
#

Every year, on the first Sunday of September, Donado comes alive with the Pilgrimage of the Pilgrim Virgin. Faithful and visitors from all over Sanabria and La Carballeda come to the sanctuary to pay homage to the Virgin in an atmosphere of festivity and tradition.

A Unique Natural Environment
#

The village of Donado, like many small towns in the region of Sanabria and La Cabrera, is surrounded by a green and mountainous landscape, typical of the ancient Asturian territory. Although the road connecting Astorga with Puebla de Sanabria is little traveled, those who venture along it are rewarded with views of quiet villages, slate roofs, and an atmosphere of calm.

Today, Donado is a perfect place for those seeking peace, quiet walks, and a friendly conversation with the few inhabitants who still remain here. During the winters, barely thirty people reside in this picturesque village, but its rich history and natural beauty make it an unforgettable destination for visitors.
