Cobreros is a charming municipality located in the province of Zamora, within the autonomous community of Castile and León. Located in the heart of the Sanabria Lake Natural Park, it is an ideal destination for nature and history lovers.

Geography and Nature

The municipality of Cobreros is located in a mountainous region, characterized by the presence of the Sierra Segundera and the Tera River Valley. It stands out for its varied altitude, which ranges from 900 meters on the banks of the rivers to 1792 meters on the peaks of the Sierra Segundera. Here you will find the beautiful Sotillo Lagoon, a natural haven perfect for hiking and observing fauna and flora.

In San Román de Sanabria, one of the towns in the municipality, there is a majestic centuries-old chestnut tree, with a diameter of 5 meters and a circumference of 16 meters, being one of the most impressive specimens in Europe.

History

Ancient Age
#

The presence of pre-Roman settlements is suggested by petroglyphs known as the Footprints of Santiago’s Horse, which could be related to Celtic culture.

Middle Ages
#

The history of Cobreros dates back to the 9th or 10th century, when it was repopulated during the repopulation process of the kings of León. Its name could derive from the work of copper molding or from settlers from Galicia or Asturias. Documents from the 12th century mention Cobreros, as a donation from Pedro Pérez to the monastery of San Martín.

Modern and Contemporary Ages

In the 16th century, Cobreros and Avedillo shared taxes under a joint administration. The 1591 census reveals a high proportion of hidalgos in the population, reflecting a community of free owners. During the War of Independence, the area was occupied by French contingents. The current structure of the municipality, with its 13 districts, was consolidated in the 20th century.

Heritage and Traditions

Cobreros is home to a rich architectural and cultural heritage. Its parish church, with a history of renovations dating back to the 17th century, features a main altarpiece and an interesting internal structure.

Among its districts, Santa Colomba de Sanabria stands out for the Ermita de la Virgen de la Portería, an 18th-century sanctuary. Avedillo de Sanabria and Barrio de Lomba also have churches with notable architectural elements, such as trioblate windows and baroque bell towers.

Festivals and Legends

Cobreros celebrates the Feast of the Holy Christ on September 14th and 15th. The cave of the Moors and the footprint of Santiago’s horse are local legends that add a mystical touch to the region.
