Fish Lagoon
Fish Lagoon is a mountain lagoon of glacial origin, located in the municipality of Galende, in the province of Zamora, Castile and Leon. At an altitude of 1707 meters, this lagoon offers a spectacular landscape, especially in winter, when its waters freeze and the surroundings are covered with snow, creating a dreamlike scene.
Location and Climate #
Located in the Sanabria region, Fish Lagoon is part of the Sanabria Lake and Surroundings Natural Park, a protected area known for its natural and scenic richness. The lagoon is a short distance from the famous Sanabria Lake, the largest glacial lake on the Iberian Peninsula.
The climate in Fish Lagoon is extreme, characterized by cold, humid winters and milder, drier summers. During the winter months, temperatures rarely exceed 0 °C, and minimums can drop to -20 °C, accentuated by strong winds that can bring the wind chill to -30 °C or less. Snowfalls are frequent and abundant, accumulating up to two meters of snow that can remain until well into June.
Given the climate, it is advisable to wear appropriate clothing if you visit.
Access and Panoramic Views #
Fish Lagoon is the only Sanabrian lagoon accessible by car, thanks to a paved road that, although winding and with some sharp curves, allows comfortable access to a parking area near the lagoon. However, during the winter, this road may be closed due to snowfall, as snowplows prioritize access to inhabited areas.
The journey to the lagoon offers breathtaking views, especially from the viewpoint known as Neveira, from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Sanabria Lake and a large part of the region. This point is ideal for taking a break and capturing some photographs of the landscape.
Activities and Hiking #
Fish Lagoon is an excellent starting point for several hiking trails, many of them signposted. Among the most popular are the trails leading to Peña Trevinca and Moncalvo, two peaks that offer challenges for both novice and experienced hikers. These trails allow you to explore the rich biodiversity of the area and enjoy spectacular views from the top of the mountains.
In winter, the lagoon becomes a popular destination for cross-country skiing and other winter activities, although precautions are recommended due to the extreme weather conditions. In summer, the landscape transforms, revealing green meadows and diverse flora that includes alpine and high-mountain species.
