Ermita de la Alcobilla
The Ermita de la Alcobilla is a prominent pilgrimage and Marian devotion center located between the towns of San Justo and Rábano de Sanabria, in the province of Zamora. This temple, of considerable dimensions and construction quality, is an example of the region’s religious heritage.
History and Legend #
The name “Alcobilla” possibly derives from “escubilla”, related to brooms (shrubs with white or yellow flowers) that abound in the surrounding area. According to legend, a shepherd found an image of the Virgin Mary under a broom, which led to the construction of the hermitage in that place. It is said that in this area there was a Roman city called Alcobilla Lliucencia, and a stele with a solar wheel embedded in the old house of the saint is still preserved.
Architecture and Surroundings #
The temple stands out for its magnificent bell tower, topped with a picturesque dome and a niche above the door that houses a sculpture of the Queen of Heaven. The hermitage, which dates back to the 16th century, could have been built on an older sanctuary.
The surroundings of the hermitage are equally impressive, with numerous centuries-old chestnut trees and some millennia-old, which add a unique natural and landscape value to the place.
Festivities and Pilgrimages #
The Ermita de la Alcobilla is the scene of one of the most important pilgrimages in the Sanabria region. Every 8th and 9th of September, the towns of San Justo, Barrio de Rábano and Rábano carry their Virgins and banners in procession to honor the Virgin of La Alcobilla. This festivity, accompanied by bagpipes and drums, is a celebration of tradition and local devotion.
During the nine previous days, from August 30th to September 7th, masses are held in memory of the deceased brother confreres, in an event known as “La Novena”.
How to Get There #
The Ermita de la Alcobilla is located at a crossroads between San Justo, Coso, Barrio de Rábano and Rábano. Its location in the Sanabria Lake natural park makes this place a must-visit for those who wish to combine spirituality, history and nature on their trip.
Visiting the Ermita de la Alcobilla not only offers an immersion in faith and tradition, but also the opportunity to enjoy a naturally beautiful environment.
