Castro de As Muradellas
The Castro de As Muradellas is a fascinating Celtic archaeological site located in the municipality of Lubián, in Alta Sanabria, near the village of Hermisende. This castro dates back to the 3rd century BC and is located on a steep promontory, naturally protected by the deep gorge of the Tuela River.
History and Description #
Location and Characteristics #
The castro is strategically located on a meander of the Tuela River, on the western slope of the Marabón mountain range. This location offered an unbeatable natural defense, complemented by impressive defensive systems built by its inhabitants. These included two walled enclosures, ditches and a field of sunken stones that made it difficult for potential attackers to access.
Structure of the Castro #
The castro is divided into two zones: intramuros and extramuros. Inside the first walled enclosure are the houses, which have a rectangular floor plan with rounded corners. These houses, excavated in the 1980s, have very hard clay floors and roofs made of plant materials. The second enclosure was used for agricultural, livestock and hunting activities, as well as containing mines and other natural resources.
Defensive Systems #
The castro has a field of sunken stones, parallel ditches and two walls built with large granite blocks. These defensive elements were designed to slow down or prevent the access of enemy cavalry and soldiers, thus protecting the community that inhabited the castro.
